How Are Hydraulic Seals Made?

Hydraulic and Pneumatic Seals for engineered machinery can be designed and manufactured in a variety of materials, shapes and sizes.

Selecting the right material

Most hydraulic seals are made from polymeric materials, more commonly polyurethane, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), elastomers and rubber. Although, other materials can be used for more specialist seals.

It's important to select a material that best suits a seal's end use. For instance, the seal's operating conditions such as pressure, fluid compatibility, extreme temperatures, working environment and legislation standards, will all have an impact when deciding on which material to use.

Manufacturing process

During the manufacturing process, a Computerised Numerical Control (CNC) lathe machine is used to create the seal. These can be programmed with standard and customised seal profiles. Taking the digitalised data of the profile, the CNC lathe then works to cut the shapes of the seal from the selected material.
